Driving in UK
Think! Keep Left
At Condor Self Drive, we try harder to ensure you have an enjoyable rental experience. Here we provide some useful tips when driving in Scotland.
Think! When turning right
Use your mirrors to check the position of vehicles behind you and when it is safe to do so, signal right and move to a position just left of the middle of the road.
When there is a safe gap between you and the oncoming traffic, turn right, but look out for motorcyclists and pedestrians.
Think! At junctions
There is no general priority rule, as priority is marked at most junctions. On a minor road you will see either a triangular ‘GIVE WAY’ or red ‘STOP’ sign. Many junctions will have only ‘GIVE WAY’ markings on the carriageway (dotted white lines and a white triangle on the carriageway). You must obey these signs.
Think! When using roundabouts
At roundabouts give way to vehicles coming from the right unless road markings show otherwise. Drive around the roundabout clockwise, and signal left as you approach the exit you wish to take
Think! Keep left
You must drive on the left. Be particularly careful when rejoining a road after a rest break or overnight stop.
Think! Don’t drink and drive
The blood alcohol limit is 80mg per 100ml but you can be prosecuted with a lower level of alcohol if your driving is impaired. The penalties for drink driving are very severe. It is better not to drink at all if you are driving.
Think! Wear your seat belt
• You must wear a seat belt.
• You must not carry an unrestrained child in any vehicle.
• Children under three years must use the child restraint appropriate for their weight in any vehicle.
• Children 3 years up to 135cm in height must use the appropriate child restraint.
• Never use a rear-facing child restraint in the front seat of a car fitted with a passenger airbag.
Think! Take a break
• Make sure you are fit to drive. Do not start a long journey (longer than an hour) if you are already tired.
• Avoid long journeys between midnight and 6am, when natural alertness is at a minimum.
• Plan to stop for a 15-minute break every 2 hours on a long journey.
• If you do feel tired when you are driving, stop in a safe place (never on the motorway hard shoulder).
• Drink a cup or two of strong black coffee and take a short nap (up to 15 minutes).
Accidents
If you are involved in an accident you must stop and give your name, address and insurance details to the other drivers involved. If anyone is injured, you must also inform the police.
Motorways. No stopping
• Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.
• Keep within the speed limit.
• Keep left except when overtaking.
• Use the hard shoulder only in an emergency and switch on your hazard lights. Phone for help and then wait away from the vehicle in a safe place.
• Emergency telephones are situated approximately every 1500 metres.
Guard against theft
Always lock the vehicle when leaving it unattended and don't leave valuables or belongings on display. If you do experience theft, report it to the Police and obtain a crime reference number or Police Report.
If you have an accident
• Dial 999 to call the Police, Ambulance or Fire Service.
• Do not admit fault. Do not give money to anyone.
• Obtain vehicle and insurance details of any other party involved.
• Do not attempt to drive your car unless you believe it is safe to do so.
• Go to your nearest Condor Self Drive location and we will help you fill in an Incident Report Form.
